Ioannina is the capital and largest city of the Ioannina regional unit and of Epirus, an administrative region in north-western Greece. It is located on a plateau on the western side of Lake Ioannina (ancient Pambotis), facing the gray limestone mass of Mount Mitsikeli. The city's foundation has been ascribed to the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD. According to the 2011 census, the city population was 65,574.
